The book music lovers from all over the world have been waiting for. If you think you've not heard the Tabla being played - you're wrong!! You'll hear its hypnotic rhythms in film soundtracks, advertising jingles and in every kind of music: jazz, dub, rap and Bhangra as well as classical Indian music.

Now you can learn to play an instrument that will add its own unique character to whatever style of music you choose. The subtlety and sophistication of this instrument is boundless, but you can start easily and simply by following the step-by-step advice of international expert, Tarsem Kalyan.

As the master himself says: 'when you finish the course, it won't be the end. It's really the beginning!'

Teach Yourself Tabla - Book Review

This book stems from Tarsem Kalyan's work with the London-based Community Music organisation. Faced with the task of creating and maintaining an interest in the tabla among beginner musicians, he developed a thoroughly pragmatic teaching method. This brought together theoretical and practical elements within a progressive and carefully structured process, and thus enabled students to learn effectively. Teach Yourself Tabla is the outcome of that process.

It is divided into 20 lessons which are linked to information on the history, nature, basic sounds, tuning, finger positions and rhythmic cycles associated with the instrument. Good use is made of charts (like the layouts of the heads of the two drums), sequential full colour photography.

There is much here that will be of use to teachers developing pupils skills in Indian music within the 14-18 age-range.
